Core Courses
PT 501 Calling & Cultivation
A consideration of the Christian’s vocation in general as well as what elements constitute a formal “call” to pastoral ministry, church-planting, or missionary labor. A thematic and practical study of biblical principles and guidelines for spiritual formation and personal godliness. Includes readings in Christian devotional classics (2 credits).
PT 611 Preaching & Teaching
A systematic and practical study regarding the nature and method of preparing and delivering sermons and lectures. Includes an analysis of types of sermons (expositional, topical, redemptive historical) and a consideration of the importance of the Holy Spirit and prayer in connection with the ministry of the Word
(2 credits).
PT 621 Pastoral Theology
A systematic and practical study regarding the nature and methodologies of pastoral ministry in the church. Includes an analysis of the pastor’s role as leader, administrator, shepherd, counselor, and trainer, as well as his relationship to his fellow-elders, deacons, and other church staff (2 credits).
PT 701 Church Ministry
A systematic and practical study regarding the nature and methodologies of church ministry. Attention is given to special ministries of the church, including Sunday School, small groups, and youth ministry. Also includes a brief theology of worship and practical guidelines for developing a biblical and vibrant music ministry (2 credits).
PT 702 Biblical Counseling
A systematic and practical study of the theology, principles, and methodology of biblical counseling
(2 credits).
PT 801 Evangelism & Missions
A systematic and practical study of the theology and practice of biblical evangelism and missions. Includes an analysis of evangelistic outreach in the contexts of an established local church, a new church-plant, and foreign missions (2 credits).
PT 901 Writing Practicum
Students will be required to write four major term papers or a single Master’s thesis. Each of the four term papers will focus on a different area of theology: exegetical, historical, systematic, and practical. The Master’s thesis will focus on a passage, book, or genre of Scripture or a biblical topic (4 credits).
PT 911 Preaching Practicum
The student will preach at least four sermons (or lectures) through the course of his program in a context where his pastor(s) may assess his gifts and provide constructive feedback (2 credits).
PT 921 Ministerial Practicum
Students will be required to fulfill at least 150 hours of practical ministry by leading in public worship, leading evangelistic outreaches, visiting the sick, and/or teaching Sunday School classes at the discretion of his church leadership (3 credits).
Elective
PT 802 Pastoral Epistles
An exegetical, topical, and practical study of the Pastoral Epistles with a special focus upon their abiding relevance for today’s pastor (2 credits).
